Marquette County Health Department
Shape 2000 Survey of the Health of Adults

Many things help shape the landscape of Marquette County. Rural farms, mines, forest service industry, tourism, educational and medical facilities are just a few. The most important thing shaping our county is the people who call it home. One of the most significant factors contributing to the vitality of Marquette County residents is their health status.

We are proud to present the Survey of the Health of Adults, the Population, and the Environment (SHAPE) which provides, for the first time, community-level data on chronic disease, injury and behavioral risks. SHAPE contains data drawn from a random sample survey of 481 Marquette County residents, and it assesses health from a broad, holistic perspective.

This report demonstrates that overall Marquette County residents are fairly healthy. However, we still have work to do. Our goal is to address our weaknesses, build on our strengths, and improve the health of all our residents.

Information from this report creates exciting possibilities for the planning and developing of health promotion activities. SHAPE represents significant and ongoing collaborative work between the county’s two hospitals, Marquette General Hospital and Bell Memorial Hospital, Northern Michigan University and the Marquette County Health Department and reflects our commitment to public health.

By working together, we can improve the health of our citizens and make Marquette County an even more exciting and dynamic place to live.
