Sanitizing & Disinfecting
Solutions for Health Child Care
How to Sanitize:
First clean surface with hot, soapy water and rinse. Then apply one of the following
sanitizing solutions:
For hard, nonporous surfaces
1 Tablespoon liquid bleach.
1 gallon water.
Leave wet for 2 minutes. Allow to air dry; no rinsing.
For porous surfaces (like wooden
cutting boards)
3 Tablespoons liquid bleach.
1 gallon water.
Leave wet for 2 minutes. Rinse and wipe or air dry.
CLEAN HANDS: The First Line
of Defense
Proper Handwashing Techniques:
> Wet hands and lather with soap, rubbing front and back of hands and wrists for at
least 20 seconds.
> Rinse under running water from wrists to fingertips.
> Dry hands with paper towel.
Use paper towel to turn off faucet. (Remember dirty hands turned the faucet on!)
You Should Wash Hands...
Before eating or handling food.
Before feeding a child.
Before and after diapering.
After handling or cleaning body fluids
After wiping noses, mouths, bottoms, sores.
After handling or feeding pets.
After outdoor activities.
After using the toilet.
GENERAL DISINFECTING
Disinfect after each use:
Childrens toys
Diaper changing surface
Disinfect daily or when soiled:
Dishcloths, synthetic sponges
Floors
Bathroom areas:
Toilet bowls and seats
Toilet training equipment
Faucet and flush handles
Door knobs
Countertops
Sinks
How to Disinfect:
First clean surfaces to remove visible soil. Then apply the following disinfecting
solution.
Disinfecting Solution:
3 Tablespoons liquid bleach
1 Quart water
Leave wet for 2 minutes.
Rinse and wipe or air dry.
For Toilet Bowls:
1. Flush toilet.
2. Add 1 cup liquid bleach to bowl.
3. Brush entire bowl.
4. Let stand for 10 minutes.
5. Flush again.
Special Attention for the Diaper Changing
Areas:
> Use the diapering area only for diapering
> Changing surfaces should be washable, made of wipeable plastic or equipped with
removable paper covers.
After Diapering:
> Rinse with clean water.
> Wipe or air dry.
> Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after each
diaper change.
