Meeting Minutes

   I.       Welcome and Introductions - Jim welcomed everyone and introductions were made.

   II.       Approval of Minutes - Minutes were approved.
             
  III.       Set Agenda:  SPF/SIG Community Plan Discussion
            There’s more to come in October about how we can integrate our programs with
           each other.       SPF/SIG’s primary target is reduction of drinking and driving.  We have comparable objectives.
           
 IV.       Program Sharing/Announcements 

Jim Harrington, MCHD,  encouraged everyone to fill out the Activity Reporting form every month.  We need to document the key activities you do.  We will investigate an online method to capture the information. 

Don Peterman, NMU Public Safety,  is teaching 4 Defensive Sexual Assault classes.  He was invited to speak to the freshmen athletes last night.

Kelly Zambon, Child & Family Services,  the Strengthening Families program is scheduled on Wednesdays in Marquette for families with children 10-14 years old.  Kelly will e-mail the flier to Jim and he will e-mail it to our e-mail list.   There is no charge for the participants and it has 7 sessions and includes free dinners.
She will be starting to work in the SODA program.  She can get referrals from anyone.  She meets with the student and helps to set goals.

Dan Maas, Bell Behavioral Services, did a pilot prevention program that targeted communication skills.  The focus was on teaching assertive skills and reflective listening.  It ran from late May to July and was designed at the court’s request.  It was open to anyone with a focus on young adults.  It was very successful.   

Paul Olson, GLYD,  is in the middle of Safe Homecoming and Back to School.  He is running ads that focus on making good decisions to having a good safe school year. Jim asked him to send a copy of the ad and we’ll post it on the website.

Larry Ziombkowski, CSS,  they are sponsoring a Recovering Gathering on September 25th from 4 to 7 pm at Victory Lutheran Church at Sawyer. It will include meeting the professionals, speakers, children’s activities, information, and a free meal.
Catholic Charities of the UP is offering new treatment services for addiction co-occurring with mental health disorders at the Sawyer Medical Center. 
They are offering a depression clinic with the MCAC volunteer program.  It is an experimental group program.  

Larry Lawless, MARESA, the Safe and Drug Free Schools program is concentrating on violence prevention this year.  There is a program they can offer called “Stop The Violence.”

Diane Raven, GLRC Youth Services, is looking for funding for the “Hidden Voices” artwork.  It shows childhood trauma and creates awareness.  It’s contained in a traveling exhibit that’s shown at Marquette Senior High School, Negaunee High School, and is now in a traveling exhibit for professionals.  It will be shown at the Peter White library.  Larry said they could help with supplies.  George said she could apply for an MC2 mini grant.   

Sara Fogaroli, LSS, has their grant up for review.  They offer case management services to adults.

Etienne Senker, MARESA, there will be a High Ropes Course:  To the Limit and Beyond! on September 29th at the Clear Lake Education Center for High School students.  It’s open for teens who want to make a difference. 

Shelley Ovink, Lutheran Social Services,  works with violent youth and does individual and group work for male perpetrators. 

Dee Lindenberger, MARESA, students can make a positive difference.  There will be a TLC-Fest on November 16-18 at the Sault Ste. Marie High School.  It will help train high school youth to be leaders and take an active role.
The ACTion Troupe Training trains students to develop dramatic scenes to present powerful healthy lifestyle messages.
There has been requests for a Middle School ACTion Troupe training and it will be offered in Marquette, date TBA. 
There will be an Advanced Bully-Free Schools Workshop on September 26 at MARESA in Marquette.
 
George Sedlacek, MCHD,  for SPF/SIG they are putting together a logic model using some of MC2 existing objectives. 

Annette Dopren, Big Brothers Big Sisters, will be starting the Lunch Buddies program again.  Adults meet their buddy twice a month during lunch at school.  You eat lunch, talk, and spend time together.  You can contact BBBS at 475-7801 or www.bbbsmqt.org.

Louise Daul, BBBS, will be contacting key people to locate more community mentors.   They received a Department of Ed grant to help support the mentors. 
Marquette, Munising, Gwinn, Powell, and Negaunee schools had to commit before they will start the Lake Superior School mentoring program.  It will be new in Marquette.

Josh Hechtman, Marquette County Juvenile Court,  will be continuing youth offenders juvenile incentive program.  It’s the accountability forum.  It teams an adult with a youth.  Josh will e-mail a flier to Jim.  It focuses on positive face time.

Sue Girard-Jackson, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office,  and Lenny Shible conducted successful FACE Responsible Alcohol training. It’s a free 90 minute presentation.   
The Sheriff’s Office supervise the enforcement grants.  They’re waiting for more funding.  The “Over the Limit, Under Arrest” was in effect for a couple of weeks.   
Marquette has requested city police time for Fall school start up and it’s been busy. The funding came out of the Youth Alcohol grant.  We need to be more proactive.

Lenny Shible, NMU Health Promotion, last year their office printed and distributed 7,000 designated driver cards with taxis and limos phone numbers.  They will continue doing that.  Student groups and Public Safety helped out at the Late Night at the PEIF Event.  800-1000 people attended.  The Greek council planned it and provided 80 volunteers for events. 
The UP Youth Conference is October 24th with Penny Norton from FACE as the keynote speaker.
To help raise visibility the campus cinema ran ads with 24 messages.  There was a contest for the ads produced by NMU students.

Karen Twa, MGH,  the First International FASDAY will be September 9.  They’re asking for one magic minute of silence on that day. 
 The FAS conference is on September 13th. 

Old Business:
  
            A.  Complete Community Surveys - Jim passed out surveys to members who  needed to fill out one. 

            B.   0-0-1-3 - The Marquette County Fair had a beer tent this year and they used the 0-0-1-3 program.  It was reported to be very quiet at the Fair by the law enforcement.  We’ll put together a 0013 brochure with a quote from the Fair.
                   Sue and Lenny could approach the Seafood Fest next year.   
Lenny mentioned that there will be an Alumni beer tent at NMU’s Homecoming.  NMU is taking precautions in the beer tent and Lenny mentioned the 0013 program.

  VI.      New Business:
                       
            A. Jim reported that more Bingo games in Marquette went smokefree.  The Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday games in Marquettte just went smokefree.
The State has a fax form for the Michigan Tobacco Quitline.  People 13 years old and up can use the Quitline.  Through Quitline you can get 50% off of patches.  If you have Blue Cross insurance, you will be referred to the Blue Cross’ number.
