IV. Old Business:

A. Town Hall Meeting/April/Alcohol Awareness Month

Terry Klavitter from Great Lakes Recovery Center gave an update on an HBO "Addiction Special" on Wednesday, March 14th. The program begins at 6:30PM in Jamrich Hall room 102 at NMU. After the 60 minute program, there will be several panelists who will react to the film and the audience will also be able to react to the film and panelists. There will be 14 other HBO sessions during the month. GLRC will be receiving a DVD of the programs that they will loan out.

George Sedlacek reported on plans for the Second Annual Town Hall meeting on Alcohol Abuse Prevention. It will take place on Tuesday, April 3rd from 5:30PM to 7:00PM. He asked for volunteers to serve as a planning committee for the event. Merrilee Keller, Lenny Shible, George, and Paul Olson volunteered. George will get a poster made up in time for the HBO session.

B. Parenting Awareness Month

Parenting Awareness Month is in March. Our Prevention Calendar lists some activities for March. The conference will again be in Marquette on October 17th. The Conference Committee is looking for presenters. Go to www.preventionnetwork.org.

C. 0-0-1-3 Action Troupe Presentations

Paul Olson stated that the Westwood Action Troupe made excellent presentations at the Exchange Club and Rotary meetings. They also provided some training to the Negaunee Action Troupe for their upcoming presentation to the Negaunee Lions Club. Paul stated that after both presentations, both clubs agreed that the 0013 policy was a good policy and that they would try to incorporate the program into their existing festivals.

D. Drinking and Driving Prevention Program at Marquette Senior High School

Karla Strand who teaches 9th grade Health will be doing a special week long program for Marquette Senior High School utilizing speakers from the County to present information to the students. They will not be doing a "Every 15 Minutes" type of program at this time.

Karla will follow up with Lenny at NMU regarding some ideas to present to the students prior to the start of the week long focus. This may include some posters from students at Vandenboom, potential student video to put over the school's multi-media in each classroom, putting up posters at MSHS with a possible contest involving the students, a DVD from Lenny to show to all classrooms, and the inclusion of the newly formed Action Troupe as part of both the pre-presentation activity and during this week long program. A pre-post survey will be given to the students.

- The week (4/23/07-04/27/07) schedule will be the following:

Day 1: Law Enforcement. Mike Kohler and Mike Wasie from MCPD will be presenting on this day. With the daily contacts these officers have with MSHS students and staff, it was felt they would be the most appropriate staff and agency for this purpose. If we pursue the obstacle course with the Fatal Vision goggles later in the spring, we will ask for assistance

from other law enforcement agencies at that time.

Day 2: Court System. Mary Mantyla/staff will be presenting to the classes on this day. Her information will include such things as the jail/bonds/pre-trial/court and probation requirements/driver's license sanctions and fees with the SOS. A subsequent addition of vehicle insurance costs associated with this was felt important to include.

Day 3: MSHS Action Troupe: They will provide skits/discussion on issues regarding drinking/substance abuse and the dangers of driving while impaired and riding with someone who is impaired. We might bring in a learning center class for this. The inclusion of students in the health career tract was also discussed.

Day 4: EMS/Trauma Department: Injuries and Treatments. What to expect/the equipment used/common injuries and other associated activities if one is seriously/critically injured in a vehicle crash. Does the ingestion of alcohol and other controlled substances make your treatment more difficult?

Day 5: Project WEAVE: The emotional toll. We are hoping to have at least one presenter share real life experiences and also provide information on what Project WEAVE is and what they do with you in the community.

V. Program Sharing:

Liz Smith, Project WEAVE, stated that she will be attending the Legislation Day at the Capitol in Lansing on April 25th. She will also meet with Don Allen who is the Director of the Office of Drug Control Policy. A short discussion on the Beer Tax (or lack of an increase since the 1960s) was also discussed. She also mentioned that the CornerZone had a peer to peer workshop on the mask project that was well attended including Judge Anderegg. Some of the masks will be Juried at the Oasis Gallery. They currently are putting together a Youth Yellow Page project in which 5,000 youth yellow pages will be distributed. The yellow pages can also be provided to the 211 project so they can be sure to get this information on their data base. Project WEAVE is also helping to reapply for the GREAT grant that is helping out the South Marquette area. She also relayed information that the DSM 5 Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Diagnostic Manual is being updated.

Jayne Letts, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, provided a listing of their eight programs they provide to the area’s youth. All are mentoring programs. She encouraged Coalition members to participate by volunteering for such programs as the "Lunch Buddies" which adults meet with their lunch buddy during lunch or recess. Also, "Bowl for Kids Sake" will take place at the bowling alleys in Marquette and Ishpeming on Saturday, March 24. You can register your team by calling her at 475-7801 or by web site www.bbbsmqt.org.

Merrilee Keller, Pathways, stated that she has now moved to 706 Chippewa Square. Her phone number(226-031) and email(mkeller@up-pathways.org) are still the same. She is currently working to renew the Drug Free Community Grant that is due on March 15th. She is also working on the 2007 UP Youth Conference that will take place on October 23rd. Penny Norton is being sought as a keynote speaker.

Jim Harrington, MCHD, presented information on the Marquette County Tobacco Cessation Resources which is also located at www.smokefreeup.org. He also distributed a State Farm Site Application for schools interested in beginning a "Protecting You/Protecting Me" program designed for students in grades 1-5. Training costs are paid by State Farm, but travel costs are the participants responsibility. The Coalition may be able through the mini-grant process to help with that cost.

IX. Next Meeting Date: No Coalition meeting for April. The Second Annual Town Hall meeting on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at MARESA, will be in place of the April Coalition meeting.
