November is "Kick Butts" Month! The Marquette County Health Department is recognizing November as ‘Kick Butts’ Month. During this month, health officials are encouraging local community members to live a tobacco-free life and reduce their risk of the leading causes of preventable deaths in Michigan. In 1982, the United States Surgeon General’s Report on the Health Consequences of Smoking stated that “Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality in the United States.” Today, smoking is responsible for nearly one in five deaths in the United States. In Michigan, cigarette smoking and secondhand smoke are the two leading causes of preventable deaths.
The third Thursday in November has been designated for the Great American Smokeout by the American Cancer Society. This year it is November 15, 2007.
The idea is if you can quit for a day, you can quit for good!
